Safety and Injury Prevention Curriculum

May 22, 2018

The Problem

The number one cause of death and disability for children in the U.S. is from injuries. Most injuries are preventable AND predictable.

One Solution

A new online Safety and Injury Prevention Curriculum for Early Care and Education Settlings developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). It is an educational tool for child care providers with all levels of understanding about safety issues. The tool helps providers: learn how to prevent injuries, recognize potential safety hazards and understand how to create a safe environment.

This curriculum includes PowerPoint presentations (with video clips), quizzes, activities, and links to forms. There are six modules that can be completed in 30 to 60 minutes each, plus a seventh that is a compilation of modules one through six.

The modules are:

  • Introduction to Safety and Injury Prevention in Early Care and Education Settings (includes choking, drowning, falls, etc.)
  • Fire and Burn Prevention
  • Transportation Safety: In and Around Cars
  • Playground Safety
  • Medication Safety and Poison Prevention
  • Helmet Safety
  • Compilation Module

You can find Safety and Injury Prevention Curriculum for Early Care and Education Settlings on the NCECHW portal of the Early Childhood Learning & Knowledge Center (ECLKC).
