Child Care Aware® of America Announces New Board of Directors

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Child Care Aware® of America (CCAoA) announced three new members of its Board of Directors. Members of the Board have the unique opportunity to help shape the future of our national organization and provide leadership as we continue our fight for quality, affordable child care. These new members will begin their terms on January 1, 2019:

Stephanie Berglund, who is the Chief Executive Officer of thread, Alaska’s Child Care Resource and Referral Network. She oversees a network of partner organizations helping to strengthen access to quality early care and learning in Alaska. She has experience working on social public policy, creating innovative partnerships, and improving the quality of services in Alaska. Ms. Berglund holds additional leadership positions around advancing early care and education. Her leadership positions include member of the Alaska Early Childhood Coordinating Council, member of the Alaska Early Childhood Advocacy Group, Public Policy Committee member for Child Care Aware® of America, and the United Way of Anchorage 90% by 2020 leadership steering committee. Ms. Berglund holds a Master's in Social Work and a BAS in Psychology. She lives in Anchorage, Alaska with her husband and 13-year-old daughter and is deeply committed to improving the quality of life for children and families.

Lynne Borden, who joined the University of Minnesota in 2013 as a Professor in the Department of Family Social Science. She previously had served at the University of Arizona, Tucson, as the Thomas W. Warne Professor of Excellence in Youth Development in the Norton School of Family Consumer Sciences, and as a faculty member and extension specialist in the Division of Family Studies and Human Development. She also served at Michigan State University as a member of the faculty and extension specialist as well as the State Leader of 4-H Youth Development, Children, Youth and Family Programs. Borden's research and discovery endeavors to better understand the relationships young people have in various contexts and how those relationships affect their overall development. Her research agenda has focused on community-based programs and the role of these organizations in promoting the positive development of young people and their families. Working in partnership with community-based programs, Borden’s research helps organizations enhance their ability to better meet the needs of those they serve with data that allows them to make programmatic and policy changes. Borden’s research center, the Center for Research and Outreach (REACH) is an innovative center with the mission to provide high-quality, accessible research, outreach, and evaluation that builds the capacity of individuals and systems serving children, youth, and families. She has written numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, conference presentations, and extension materials, as well as technical reports and newsletters for the U.S. Department of Defense and Department of Agriculture. Bordon has also edited or contributed chapters to 23 books on youth development, youth programming, and public policy. Currently, she serves as a member of the Board of Human Science, and on the Sub-Committee on Social Science for the Experiment Station Committee on Organization and Policy for the Association for Public and Land Grant Universities. She has been honored with an Association of Public and Land-grant Universities Outstanding Engagement Award, a University of Arizona Alumni Association Honorary Alumnus Award, and the University of Arizona’s Extension Faculty of the Year Award.  Recently, she received the University 2018 College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) Alumni Association ACES Career Achievement Award from the University of Illinois.

Dan Harris, who is the Executive Director of the Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (INCCRRA). Mr. Harris has over twenty years of experience administering social service programs in Illinois, New Mexico and Wisconsin. His programmatic responsibilities have included leadership roles in a range of programs serving children, families and communities, including child care subsidy, state-funded pre-kindergarten, home visiting and youth development. As Executive Director of INCCRRA, he leads an organization of 70 staff responsible for an array of services supporting high-quality early care and education throughout the state. He holds an M.A. in Public Policy from the University of Chicago.

Steve Rohde will retain his position as board president until January 11, 2019, at which time a new president will be elected and he will serve as past president for one year. Steve Rohde is the Deputy Director for Resource and Referral Services for the Maryland Family Network and the Maryland Child Care Resource Network.
